Skin Disorders

The skin is the largest organ of our body, functioning as protection, excretion, and temperature regulation. In the UAE, we face extreme climate changes, exposing us to both high and low temperatures, moist and humid air, and prolonged air conditioner use, all of which can affect our skin, particularly sensitive skin. Both adults and children need proper skin care to maintain its health and treat any abnormalities. In Ayurveda, skin diseases are categorized under kushta rogas and kshudra rogas.

PSORIASIS

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition where rapid skin cell buildup leads to scaling on the skin’s surface. It often appears as red, itchy, and scaly patches, commonly affecting the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back, though it can appear anywhere on the body. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder, where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells. Both genetics and environmental factors, such as infections, injuries, stress, vitamin D deficiency, and smoking, can trigger psoriasis. It is non-contagious and does not spread through contact, though it can be hereditary.

It may be caused by genetic factors, an impaired immune system, or environmental triggers such as allergens (pollen, dust mites, pet dander), irritants (soaps, detergents, perfumes), certain foods, and extreme temperatures.

It manifests as scaly patches, red skin, and persistent dandruff. In infants, it is called cradle cap. While the exact cause is not fully understood, it may be due to an overgrowth of yeast on the skin, an inflammatory response, and excess oil production.
