AYURVEDIC VIEW AND TREATMENT FOR DIGESTIVE DISORDERS

In Ayurveda, the digestive system is referred to as Koshta and Koshtangas, and the concept of Agni (digestive fire) is vital. In the digestive system, Jataragni (stomach fire) can be imbalanced in three ways:
  1. Mandagni (weak fire)

  2. Teekshnagni (sharp fire)

  3. Vishamagni (irregular fire)

The state of Koshta (digestive tract) can be:
  1. Mridu Koshta (soft or sensitive digestive system)

  2. Madhyamam Koshta (moderate)

  3. Kroora Koshta (hard or tough)

Imbalances in Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas can cause conditions like Agnimandhyam (weak digestion), Amlapitta (acid reflux), Atisara (diarrhea), Grahani (IBS-like symptoms), and Aruchi (loss of appetite).

Ayurvedic Treatment Approach

Ayurvedic treatment for digestive disorders focuses on balancing doshas and enhancing Agni. The treatments include:
  1. Herbal Medications:

    1. To correct dosha imbalances.

  2. Panchakarma Procedures:

    1. Virechanam (therapeutic purgation)

    1. Vasthi (medicated enemas)

  3. For Anorectal Diseases (e.g., Hemorrhoids, Fistula):

    1. Kshara Sutra (medicated thread treatment for fistula)

    1. Herbal medicines specific to the condition.
