Sciatica & Piriformis Syndrome Treatment in Ayurveda
Ayurvedic management for radiating leg pain caused by sciatic nerve compression, focusing on inflammation control, nerve nourishment, and functional recovery.
What is Sciatica & Piriformis Syndrome?
Sciatica is caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, which originates from the lumbar spine and travels along the back of the leg.
Piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular condition in which the sciatic nerve is compressed by the piriformis muscle located deep in the buttocks. Both conditions can produce similar symptoms due to nerve involvement.
Common Symptoms
- Pain in lower back radiating to buttock, thigh, calf, or foot
- Numbness, tingling, vibration, or pins-and-needles sensation
- Symptoms worsen with bending, sitting, coughing, or sneezing
- Difficulty in prolonged sitting or walking
Sciatica in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, sciatica can be correlated with Grdhrasi, which is a Vathavyadhi where vitiated Vatha affects the Kandara (tendons and nerves).
Vatha imbalance leads to nerve compression, pain, stiffness, and restricted movement, often aggravated by Ama and improper digestive fire.
Herbal House Ayurveda Treatment for Sciatica
Treatment begins with correction of Agni and Pakwashaya, followed by therapies to pacify Vatha using proper oleation, sweating procedures, and Panchakarma.
- Lepana (Application of herbal paste)
- Dhanyamladhara (Pouring of fermented decoction)
- Podikizhi (Warm herbal powder bundle)
- Ilakizhi (Herbal leaves bundle)
- Kateevasthy (Medicated oil retention over lower back)
- Kashayavasthy (Medicated enema therapy)
- Mathravasthy (Oil enema)
Care During Treatment & Prognosis
From the beginning of treatment, patients experience gradual and progressive relief. Adequate rest, avoidance of heavy exercise, sun exposure, and heavy or cold foods are essential during the treatment period.
Sciatica cannot always be cured completely, but Ayurvedic treatments can stop disease progression, reduce inflammation, and strengthen supporting structures. Mild cases may achieve complete relief, while moderate to severe cases require maintenance and repeated treatments.
In severe cases with paralysis or significant weakness, surgical intervention may be recommended.
