Sciatica Ayurveda Treatment

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve originates from the lumbar spine and travels down through the buttocks and the back of the leg up to the foot.

It commonly presents as low back pain radiating down the leg, associated with numbness, tingling, vibration, or pins-and-needles sensation.

Common Symptoms

  • Low back pain radiating to buttock, thigh, calf, or foot
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensation
  • Pain aggravated by sitting, bending, sneezing, or coughing
  • Weakness in the affected leg in severe cases

Sciatica in Ayurveda

Sciatica can be correlated with Grdhrasi in Ayurveda. It is a Vatha Vyadhi in which aggravated Vatha affects the Kandara (tendons and nerves), leading to radiating pain and stiffness along the nerve pathway.

Herbal House Ayurveda Treatment for Sciatica

Treatment begins with correction of digestive fire (Agni) and elimination of Ama from Pakwashaya. This is followed by therapies aimed at reducing Vatha, relieving nerve compression, and strengthening supporting structures.

  • Lepanam (application of herbal paste)
  • Dhanyamladhara (pouring of fermented decoction)
  • Podikizhi (warm herbal powder bundles)
  • Ilakizhi (herbal leaves bundle)
  • Kateevasthy (retaining medicated oil over lower back)
  • Kashayavasthy (medicated enema)
  • Mathravasthy (oil enema)

Care During Treatment

  • Avoid bending, prolonged sitting, and heavy lifting
  • Follow prescribed diet to control Vatha aggravation
  • Avoid cold exposure and cold food items
  • Take adequate rest during treatment period

Expected Results & Prognosis

Sciatica cannot always be cured completely, but Ayurvedic treatments can effectively stop disease progression, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the affected structures.

Mild cases may achieve complete relief. Moderate and severe cases require long-term care, maintenance therapy, and lifestyle modification. Surgery is advised only in severe cases with paralysis or marked weakness.
