Lumbar Spondylosis Treatment
Ayurvedic management for lower back degeneration, pain, stiffness, and movement-related discomfort.
Overview
Lumbar spondylosis is the degeneration of vertebrae and discs of the lower back at the lumbosacral level. Degeneration causes exposure of the outer bone layer and formation of spike-like bone growths called osteophytes, which can lead to pain, inflammation, or compression of nearby spinal nerves or spinal cord.
It can cause persistent back pain and stiffness, and in some cases, pain may radiate to the legs with or without numbness. As the lumbar spine is weight-bearing and highly mobile, symptoms often worsen with prolonged standing, sitting, bending, lifting heavy objects, or twisting movements.
Lumbar Spondylosis in Ayurveda
Lumbar spondylosis can be correlated with conditions such as Kateegraha, Grdhrasi, or Sandhigatha Vatha in Ayurveda. Joints are considered Kapha Sthana. Factors such as Dhathukshaya (tissue depletion) or Avarana (obstruction by Kapha Dosha or Ama) lead to vitiation of Vatha in the joints.
When Pitha is also involved, inflammation and pain become more prominent.
Herbal House Ayurveda Treatments for Lumbar Spondylosis
Treatment is initially aimed at reducing inflammation, followed by nourishing the Dhathus such as Asthi, Majja, and Mamsa, along with Upadhathus like Snayu and Sira.
Internal medicines are prescribed to correct Agni (digestive fire), thereby addressing Ama accumulation. Pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medicines are then administered. Rasayana therapies may be advised later to support Dhathu Poshana and provide long-term relief.
- Lepana (Application of herbal paste)
- Dhanyamladhara (Pouring of fermented decoction)
- Podikizhi (Warm herbal powder bundle)
- Kateevasthy (Retaining medicated oil over lower back)
- Kashayavasthy (Medicated enema therapy)
- Mathravasthy (Oil enema)
- Thailadhara (Pouring of warm medicated oil)
Care During Treatment
From the beginning of treatment, patients generally experience gradual and progressive relief. During the treatment period, adequate rest is advised. Patients should avoid heavy exercise, prolonged exposure to sunlight, and consumption of heavy or cold foods.
Expected Results
Lumbar spondylosis cannot be cured completely as degeneration is irreversible. However, Ayurvedic treatments can help slow further degeneration, reduce inflammation, strengthen supporting structures, and improve quality of life.
Mild cases may achieve complete relief, while moderate and severe cases require maintenance therapy and proper long-term care. Repeated treatments are advised for sustained benefits.
