Spondylosis Treatment in Ayurveda
Ayurvedic management to reduce inflammation, relieve nerve compression, and slow degenerative changes in cervical and lumbar spondylosis.
What is Spondylosis?
Spondylosis is the degeneration of vertebrae and intervertebral discs, commonly affecting the neck (cervical) and lower back (lumbar). As degeneration progresses, the outer bone surface becomes exposed, leading to the formation of osteophytes (bone spurs).
These changes may cause pain, stiffness, inflammation, and compression of nearby spinal nerves or the spinal cord. Symptoms often worsen with prolonged sitting, long desk jobs, standing, bending, lifting weights, or repeated neck and back movements.
Spondylosis in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, spondylosis can be correlated with conditions such as Greevagraha, Apabahuka, Kateegraha, Grdhrasi and Sandhigatha Vatha.
Joints are considered Kapha Sthana. Due to Dhathu Kshaya (tissue degeneration) or Avarana (obstruction by Kapha or Ama), Vatha becomes aggravated in the joints. When Pitha is involved, inflammation and burning pain may also be present.
Herbal House Ayurveda Treatments for Spondylosis
Treatment focuses first on reducing inflammation and correcting digestive fire (Agni) to remove Ama. Later stages aim at nourishing Asthi, Majja, Mamsa Dhathus and strengthening supporting structures.
- Lepana (Application of herbal paste)

- Kateevasthy (Medicated oil retention over lower back)
- Kashayavasthy (Medicated enema therapy)
- Mathravasthy (Oil enema)

Care During Treatment & Expected Results
Patients are advised to take adequate rest and avoid heavy exercise, prolonged sun exposure, and heavy or cold foods during treatment.
Degenerative changes cannot be completely reversed, but Ayurvedic treatment can significantly reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness, slow further degeneration, and improve quality of life. Mild cases may achieve complete relief, while moderate to severe cases require maintenance therapy and periodic treatment.
