Psoriasis Treatment in Ayurveda
Holistic Ayurvedic management for autoimmune skin inflammation and scaling.
About Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells and joints. Both genetics and environmental factors play a role. Infections, injuries, stress, Vitamin D deficiency, smoking etc. are trigger factors of Psoriasis.
On the skin it is characterized by the rapid buildup of skin cells, leading to scaling on the skin’s surface. It commonly appears as red, itchy, and scaly patches, most often on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back, but it can occur anywhere on the body.
It is non-contagious, won’t spread by contact but can be hereditary.
Common Symptoms
- Red, inflamed patches with silvery-white scales
- Itching and irritation
- Dry cracked skin, sometimes with bleeding
- Thickened, ridged or pitted nails
- Joint pain in associated psoriatic arthritis
Psoriasis in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, psoriasis comes under Kushta Rogas. It is caused by imbalance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha along with vitiation of Rakta Dhatu and accumulation of Ama (toxins).
Treatments are primarily done to balance Agni, reduce stress and to control symptoms. We have to eliminate Kleda from the body and bring Vata, Pitta, Kapha and Rakta under control.
Herbal House Ayurveda Treatments for Psoriasis

- Thakradhara (pouring of medicated buttermilk on head and body)
- Lepanam (external application of herbal paste)
- Ksheeravasthi (special medicated milk enema)

Diet and Lifestyle Guidelines
- Avoid non-vegetarian food, especially seafood
- Avoid citrus fruits and triggering foods
- Reduce stress and maintain proper sleep
- Avoid heavy and cold meals
- Limit excessive sun exposure during active flare
Strict diet should be followed by avoiding all the triggering factors. Stress should be controlled as it is one of the main triggering factors.
Prognosis
As it is an autoimmune condition, it cannot be cured completely. However, with proper Ayurvedic treatment, lifestyle regulation, and stress management, symptoms can be controlled effectively.
The skin symptoms may come and go on and off, but early and consistent treatment helps prevent complications and joint involvement.
