Frozen Shoulder Treatment in Ayurveda
Ayurvedic management for frozen shoulder focusing on pain reduction, restoring shoulder movement, and gradual rehabilitation.
What is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder, medically known as Adhesive Capsulitis, is a condition in which the capsule of the shoulder joint becomes thickened and tight, leading to pain and progressive restriction of shoulder movements.
It is commonly seen in people with diabetes and in those who have had prolonged immobilization of the shoulder following injury or surgery.
Stages of Frozen Shoulder
- Freezing Stage: Pain gradually increases with painful shoulder movements. This stage may last from 6 weeks to 9 months.
- Frozen Stage: Pain may reduce, but stiffness becomes severe. Without proper shoulder exercises, movements can become almost completely restricted. This stage may last from 4 to 12 months.
- Thawing Stage: Gradual improvement in the range of motion occurs. This stage may take 6 months to 2 years.
Frozen Shoulder in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, frozen shoulder can be correlated with Apabahuka, a condition caused mainly by vitiation of Vatha Dosha.
When Vatha becomes aggravated, it leads to dryness, stiffness, pain, and restriction of movement in the shoulder joint. Associated Ama can further worsen the condition.
