Osteoarthritis Knee Treatment in Ayurveda
Ayurvedic management for knee joint degeneration focusing on pain relief, inflammation control, and improving joint mobility.
Overview
Osteoarthritis of the knee is a degenerative joint condition caused by the gradual wear and tear of cartilage within the knee joint. It is commonly seen in older individuals, people with obesity, and those involved in repetitive or physically demanding work.
As the cartilage wears out, the underlying bone becomes exposed. This leads to the formation of spike-like bony projections known as osteophytes, along with a reduction in synovial fluid. The resulting friction causes inflammation, pain, and progressive joint damage.
Common Symptoms
In the early stages, pain is typically felt while bending the knee, climbing stairs, squatting, or getting up from a seated position.
In advanced stages, pain becomes severe and persistent, with stiffness, swelling, reduced range of motion, and possible deformities such as Genu Varum (bow-legged deformity).
Osteoarthritis Knee in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, the knee joint is known as Janu Sandhi. Osteoarthritis can be correlated with Sandhigata Vatha, where aggravated Vatha Dosha leads to degeneration, dryness, pain, stiffness, and restricted movements.
The involvement of Ama and vitiation of Asthi and Majja Dhatus further aggravates inflammation and joint degeneration.
