Chondromalacia Runner’s Knee Ayurveda Treatment

What is Chondromalacia?

Chondromalacia, commonly known as Runner’s Knee, is a condition in which the cartilage on the underside of the patella (kneecap) becomes softened due to repeated overuse or excessive stress on the knee joint.

It is frequently seen in athletes, runners, and individuals involved in repetitive knee bending activities.

Common Symptoms

Chondromalacia is typically presented with the following symptoms:

  • Pain around or behind the kneecap
  • Sensation of grinding or cracking inside the knee
  • Pain while climbing stairs or walking downhill
  • Discomfort after long periods of sitting or standing
  • Pain during knee flexion and extension

Chondromalacia in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, chondromalacia can be correlated with Sandhigata Vatha, where aggravated Vatha Dosha leads to dryness, degeneration, pain, and crepitus in the knee joint.

Repetitive strain and overuse further vitiate Vatha and weaken the supporting structures of the knee.

Herbal House Ayurveda Treatment for Chondromalacia

Ayurvedic treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, pacifying Vatha Dosha, improving joint lubrication, and strengthening the muscles and structures supporting the knee.

  • Lepanam (application of warm herbal paste)
  • Upanaham (herbal paste application with bandaging)
  • Kizhi (herbal bundle therapy)
  • Januvasthy (retention of medicated oil over the knee)
  • Thailadhara (pouring of warm medicated oil)
  • Dhanyamladhara (pouring of fermented decoction)

Care During Treatment

  • Avoid running, jumping, and excessive knee bending
  • Limit stair climbing and squatting activities
  • Follow rest and rehabilitation advice as suggested
  • Maintain proper posture and footwear

Expected Results & Prognosis

Early-stage chondromalacia responds very well to Ayurvedic treatment, with significant pain reduction and improvement in knee function.

Athletes and runners may require gradual rehabilitation and long-term lifestyle modification to prevent recurrence.
