Spondylolisthesis Ayurveda Treatment

What is Spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis occurs when one vertebra slips forward over the vertebra below it, most commonly in the lumbar spine. This slippage can compress nearby nerves and soft tissues, leading to low back pain, sciatica, weakness, or stiffness.

The condition may remain asymptomatic in early stages or gradually progress causing persistent discomfort and functional limitation.

Common Symptoms

  • Low back pain aggravated by standing or walking
  • Sciatic pain radiating to legs
  • Muscle tightness and stiffness in lower back
  • Weakness or numbness in severe cases

Spondylolisthesis in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, Spondylolisthesis can be correlated with Katigraham or Grdhrasi, which are Vatha Vyadhis.

Aggravated Vatha Dosha affects the Kandara (ligaments and tendons), leading to instability, pain, and neurological symptoms.

Herbal House Ayurveda Treatment for Spondylolisthesis

Treatment begins with correction of digestive fire (Agni) and elimination of Ama from Pakwashaya. This is followed by therapies aimed at reducing Vatha, relieving nerve compression, and stabilizing the spine.

  • Lepanam (application of herbal paste)
  • Dhanyamladhara (pouring of fermented decoction)
  • Podikizhi (warm herbal powder bundles)
  • Ilakizhi (herbal leaves bundle)
  • Kateevasthy (retaining medicated oil over lower back)
  • Kashayavasthy (medicated enema)
  • Mathravasthy (oil enema)

Care During Treatment

  • Avoid heavy lifting and prolonged standing
  • Maintain proper posture and spinal support
  • Follow Vatha-pacifying diet and lifestyle
  • Take adequate rest during treatment phase

Expected Results & Prognosis

Spondylolisthesis cannot be cured completely due to structural changes, but Ayurvedic treatment can effectively stop further progression, reduce pain, and strengthen spinal support structures.

Mild cases may achieve complete relief. Moderate and severe cases require ongoing care, periodic treatment sessions, and lifestyle modification. Surgical intervention is recommended only in severe cases with paralysis or progressive neurological deficit.
