Intervertebral Disc Bulge Treatment in Ayurveda
Ayurvedic management for disc bulge, prolapse, and herniation, focusing on pain relief, nerve decompression, and strengthening of spinal structures.
What is Intervertebral Disc Bulge?
Disc bulge is a condition in which the inner soft portion of the intervertebral disc begins to protrude through the outer fibrous layer. In some cases, the disc may develop a tear, leading to prolapse or herniation.
Disc bulge commonly affects the cervical spine (neck) and lumbo-sacral spine (lower back), where mobility and load bearing are high.
Common Causes
- Degenerative changes of the spine
- Repetitive bending, lifting, or twisting without adequate rest
- Sedentary lifestyle causing weak muscle support
- Traumatic injury such as falls or heavy weight lifting
- Poor posture and prolonged sitting
Symptoms of Disc Bulge
- Back or neck pain
- Pain radiating to arms, shoulders, buttocks, legs, or feet
- Numbness, tingling, or pins-and-needles sensation
- Dizziness or weakness of the affected limb
- In severe cases, paralysis or bladder and bowel disturbances
Disc Bulge in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, disc bulge can be correlated with conditions such as Kateegraha, Grdhrasi, Greevagraha, and Apabahuka.
These are Vatha Vyadhis where aggravated Vatha Dosha, sometimes associated with Ama or other Doshas, affects the spinal joints, nerves, and supporting tissues.
Herbal House Ayurveda Treatment for Disc Bulge
Treatment is planned in stages. Initially, inflammation and pain are reduced, followed by nourishment of the affected Dhathus (Asthi, Majja, Mamsa) and supporting structures (Snayu, Sira).
Internal medicines are used to correct digestive fire (Agni) and remove Ama before initiating strengthening and rejuvenative therapies.
- Lepanam (application of herbal paste)
- Dhanyamladhara (pouring of fermented decoction)
- Podikizhi (warm herbal powder bundles)
- Kateevasthy (retaining medicated oil over lower back)
- Greevavasthy (retaining medicated oil over neck)
- Kashayavasthy (medicated enema)
- Mathravasthy (oil enema)
- Thailadhara (pouring of medicated oil)
- Nasya (nasal therapy)
Care During Treatment
- Avoid heavy exercise, bending, and weight lifting
- Maintain correct posture while sitting and sleeping
- Avoid exposure to cold and cold food items
- Follow diet and lifestyle advice strictly
Expected Results & Prognosis
Disc bulge cannot always be cured completely, but Ayurvedic treatment can effectively stop further progression, reduce inflammation, and strengthen spinal structures.
Mild cases may achieve complete relief. Moderate and severe cases require long-term care, maintenance therapy, and lifestyle modification. Surgical intervention is advised only in severe cases with paralysis or significant neurological deficit.
