Inter Vertebral Disc Bulge Treatment
Ayurvedic management for disc bulge, prolapse, and herniation causing back pain, nerve compression, and mobility issues.
Overview
Disc bulge is a condition in which the inner soft portion of the intervertebral disc begins to protrude through the outer fibrous wall. In some cases, the disc may rupture, leading to annular fissure and herniation of the soft nucleus pulposus.
Disc bulge can be caused by degeneration, repetitive bending, lifting or twisting without adequate rest, sedentary lifestyle leading to weak muscle support, traumatic injury due to weight lifting or falls, and poor posture.
The most common sites are the cervical spine (neck) and the lumbo-sacral spine (lower back). Disc bulges can compress spinal nerves or the spinal cord, leading to radiating pain, numbness, tingling, dizziness, weakness, and in severe cases paralysis, urinary incontinence, or sexual dysfunction.
Disc Bulge in Ayurveda
Disc bulge can be correlated with conditions such as Kateegraha, Grdhrasi, Greevagraha, and Apabahuka in Ayurveda. These conditions are classified as Vatha Vyadhis with involvement of other Doshas.
Vitiation of Vatha due to Dhathukshaya, Avarana, or Ama accumulation leads to degeneration, pain, stiffness, and nerve-related symptoms.
Herbal House Ayurveda Treatments for Disc Bulge
Treatment begins with reducing inflammation, followed by nourishing the Dhathus such as Asthi, Majja, and Mamsa, along with Upadhathus like Snayu and Sira.
Internal medicines are prescribed initially to correct Agni (digestive fire), thereby addressing Ama. Medicines are then given to reduce pain, inflammation, and nerve compression. Rasayana therapies may be advised later to support Dhathu Poshana and long-term recovery.
- Lepana (Application of herbal paste)
- Dhanyamladhara (Pouring of fermented decoction)
- Podikizhi (Warm herbal powder bundle)
- Kateevasthy (Retaining medicated oil over lower back)
- Greevavasthy (Retaining medicated oil over neck)
- Kashayavasthy (Medicated enema therapy)
- Mathravasthy (Oil enema)
- Thailadhara (Pouring of warm medicated oil)
- Nasya (Nasal medication)
Care During Treatment
From the beginning of treatment, patients usually experience gradual and progressive relief. Adequate rest is essential. Patients should avoid heavy exercise, prolonged sun exposure, and intake of heavy or cold foods during the treatment period.
Expected Results
Disc bulge cannot be cured completely. However, Ayurvedic treatment can help stop further progression, reduce inflammation, strengthen supporting structures, and improve quality of life.
Mild cases may achieve complete relief. Moderate and severe cases require maintenance therapy and proper long-term care. Repeated treatments are advised in chronic conditions. In severe cases with paralysis or significant weakness, surgical intervention may be recommended.
